SEA SALP : Amazing Underwater Creature!!...



Sea Salp has hang about as a core attraction for researchers for numerous years.Usually they are not found singly and can be seen as a chain of salps near the surface in the Red Sea.


 








This beautiful yet weird and wonderful underwater creature is richly found in Southern ocean near Antarctica. Bodies of salps are transparent and look like jellyfishes. At times they swim, water just flows in and out of its body.

Just Dust or Disease!!..

Be Alert with dust!!!
Its just similar-to from an alien movie…… be exceptionally chary when you get trapped with dust..... as subsequent clips will show effects of bad-dust to a someone.

While he was on foot,… he felt an eye nuisance, believing that it was just a regular dust, he continued to rub his eye with an attempt to get rid of the dust.... subsequently his eyes got actually RED, and he went and bought some eye drops from a pharmacy....few days passed n his eyes were still red and seems a little swollen.

Again he dismissed it as the constant rubbing and that it will go away. The days go by the swelling of his eye got worse, redder and bigger.... till he decided to go and see a doctor for a check up.

The doctor immediately wanted an operation, being afraid of a tumor growth or cyst. At the operation, what was thought to be a growth or cyst, actually turned out to be a live worm..... what was thought initially to be just mere dust actually was an insect's egg......because of that, my friends, if u do get caught in dust, and the pain persists, pls go see a doctor immediately......

Prolonged Sitting : A Curse!!..


A new revision anticipated that those who are quiescent and are blissful sitting for elongated hours are more prone towards the risk of becoming extinct in the next three years.

The study has painted threat for office-workers who are involved in sitting jobs, and has announced that large amount of daily sitting can cause 48% probability for a premature death in contrast to their peers who do not have sitting jobs.

 
 
"An excursion to GYM or brisk Morning walk is still required, but it's also essential to keep away from prolonged sitting. These surveys have advocated that the time people pay out sitting at home, work and in traffic should be minimised by standing or walking more."

Conclusions drawn:
  • Those having lesser sitting simply add up to few years to their lives.
  • It’s been also observed that the adults who enjoy being in their chairs for 11hrs or more have more elevated threat of dying by 40% in coming three years.
  • Still the people who remain seated for just 8hrs daily also show a 15% elevated risk of dying.
  • This menace continues even after having sound physical activity, average weight and general health.

Robotic Bird


Our engineering group has achieved incredible heights by designing this magnificent flying machine. The challenge underlying this invention was minimizing the weight of the robotic bird while maximizing lift from its flapping winds. 
This robotic seagull is 1m in length and weigh even less than ½kg with boasts a 2-meter wingspan. 
  
If we start comparing with real bird, the well known European herring gull is just little over ½ m in length with a wingspan up to one and a half meters and weighs roughly 1kg.

Skin transformed for cancer fight

Dynamic sites reviled us that scientists are working tirelessly to open new possibilities that one day Cancer Patients will be using their own skin cells to fight their tumours.

This study was published in the famous journal Gene Therapy and was focused on dendritic cells and their unique properties, which are responsible to organised a part of their immune response. By showing identifying antigens or markers cells tell the immune system what and where to attack. If they can display cancer markers then obviously the cancerous cells will become the targets.

Experiments conducted in various laboratory showed that these dendritic cells were able to activate both kind of cells, namely those which kill foreign cells and those produce anti bodies.

"Now the very next challenge is to confirm out if these laboratory-generated cells will be competent enough for immunotherapy-based cancer-treatments to be used in the clinic."

Solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

Solar flares are like large explosions found on sun that send light, energy and high speed particles into space. These flares are found associated with large solar magnetic storms that are known as (CMEs) coronal mass ejections. The number of such flares usually increases in every 11 years, and currently sun is moving towards another, that is likely to be in 2013. This means that more of the flares will be coming in the times to come, some may be small and some may be big enough to send their harmful  radiation to the Earth.

If these will be directed at Earth, such CMEs and the associated flares will result in very long lasting radiating storms that will harm communication system, power grids, satellite systems, and various land-based technologies. For example,: X-class flares occured on 5th Dec, 2006 and 6th Dec, 2006, triggered the CME that had badly interfered with the GPS signals which used to be forworded to land-based signal receivers.

Farewell to Assays? Researchers Create Web-based Tool for Determining Pluripotency in Human Stem Cells


In an effort to create a cheaper, faster, and animal-free method for determining pluripotency in stem cells, an international research team has developed a web-based test that helps investigators determine whether their cell lines are pluripotent based on their gene expression profiles.

"Many scientists are unhappy" with the teratoma assay, Jeanne Loring, a Scripps Research molecular biologist and one of the authors of the study, said in a statement. The method can take six to eight weeks to get results, she noted, and is also "technically challenging and difficult to standardize." PluriTest uses two related classifiers: The "pluripotency score," which indicates whether a query sample contains a pluripotent signature; and the "novelty score," which measures how far the stem cells in a query sample deviate from the normal pluripotent stem cell lines.

Simply put, "you upload raw data to the website and it tells you if your cell line is pluripotent or not and it's also got some information about ... interesting patterns in the gene expression profile," Franz-Josef Mueller, a researcher at the Center for Integrative Psychiatry in Kiel, Germany, and a co-author on the paper, told BioInform.

Treatment breakthrough for rare disease linked to diabetes


University of Manchester scientists have led an international team to discover new treatments for a rare and potentially lethal childhood disease that is the clinical opposite of diabetes mellitus. Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a condition where the body's pancreas produces too much insulin – rather than too little as in diabetes – so understanding the disease has led to breakthroughs in diabetes treatment.
Current drug treatments for CHI often fail in the most severe forms of the disease and the patient has to have some, or most, of their pancreas removed. The Manchester researchers discovered that treating cells under specially modified conditions helped to recover the function of the internal switches that control insulin release. Through these experiments the team have provided the first evidence that the outcomes of gene defects can be reversed in human insulin-producing cells.

Developing robots for the hospital emergency room

When a patient arrives in the ER, the first thing he or she must do is register. Today, this is handled by a registration clerk. In the proposed system, the clerk would direct the patient (or attending family members) to a robot assistant in the form of a kiosk. The robot assistant would guide them through the registration process using a touch-screen and possibly voice prompts. When proper security measures are in place, the robot will be able to fill in much of the information for existing patients by accessing their electronic records. When the patients provide critical information, such as reporting chest pain, the robot can immediately alert the staff so they can provide immediate attention. Lacking such an alert, the robot would inform the patient of the current wait time and direct him or her to the waiting room.

The emergency room application is a perfect way to test a special cognitive architecture that the Vanderbilt engineers have developed for robots that is based on the working memory in the brain. "Our architecture is designed to allow robots to integrate quick decision-making with the more common deliberate decision-making process in flexible ways," Kawamura said.

The paper proposes a system of cognitive robots that gather medical information and take basic diagnostic measurements and ultimately provide tentative diagnoses to the human staff in order to address the critical concerns facing emergency departments in major hospitals: shortening the time that patients must wait, relieving the strain on overburdened emergency room staff and reducing the number of mistakes that are made.

Gene Enables Fish to 'Disappear'!!!...

Researchers led by Vanderbilt's Roger Cone, Ph.D., have discovered a new member of a gene family that has powerful influences on pigmentation and the regulation of body weight.
        

The gene is the third member of the agouti family. Two agouti genes have been identified previously in humans. One helps determine skin and hair color, and the other may play an important role in obesity and diabetes.
The new gene, called agrp2, has been found exclusively in bony fish, including zebrafish, trout and salmon. The protein it encodes enables fish to change color dramatically to match their surroundings, the researchers report this week in the early edition of theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The first agouti gene, which produces the striped "agouti" pattern in many mammals, was discovered in 1993. The same year, Cone and his colleagues at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland reported the discovery of the gene that encoded the melanocortin-1 receptor, a key player in the pigmentation story.
They demonstrated that the agouti protein prevented the melanocortin-1 receptor in melanocytes (pigment cells) in the skin from switching on production of black-brown pigment, and instead shifted the pigment to yellow-red hues.
The second agouti gene encodes agouti-related protein (AgRP), which blocks a melanocortin receptor in the brain. It prevents the melanocortin-4 receptor from inhibiting food intake, and thus stimulates eating.

Early lung cancer detection: Optical Technology


"By examining the lining of the cheek with this optical technology, we have the potential to prescreen patients at high risk for lung cancer, such as those who smoke, and identify the individuals who would likely benefit from more invasive and expensive tests versus those who don't need additional tests," said Hemant K. Roy, M.D., director of gastroenterology research at NorthShore.
The optical technique is called partial wave spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy and was developed by Vadim Backman, professor of biomedical engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Backman and Roy earlier used PWS to assess the risk of colon and pancreatic cancers, also with promising results.
The lung cancer findings are published online Oct. 5 by the journal Cancer Research. The paper will appear in print in the Oct. 15 issue.

Indian students open 'DOORS' to the web for differently-abled

Bangalore: A group of students from Bangalore's Government Sri Krishnarajendra Silver Jubilee Technological Institute have developed an operating system (OS) that will help the differently-abled people to use their PCs and laptops. Called the DOORS which expands to Disk Operated Office Recovery System, the OS makes use of gesture controlling system for physically challenged users, including visually impaired. 


The students, Neelakantan S, Vivekananda M, Veda Prakash and Mohammad Irshaad, have worked on the development of the OS for three years now. The OS is able to detect the slightest movements of the hands or limbs of a person with the help of an intensity sensor.

The OS includes a speech recognition tool specially meant for the visually impaired users. The OS also comes with an in-built anti-virus program called Cool Cops that automatically quarantine infected files.

The live OS does not require installing and takes about a minute to load. This makes the OS more user -friendly. The OS also supports Windows and Linux files.
